Merry Christmas!

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas (if it applies). We're currently in New York, and sitting in the truck outside of a Dunkin' Donuts to get free wireless. Ha ha. Had to submit our timecards, so the trek was necessary. Unfortunately for Bill, he is having trouble.

Here's a quick summary, and I'll probably go into detail some other day... Anyway, we got here on Saturday morning after driving all day Friday. It's COLD. We went to the Bills - Giants game yesterday. Wow. COLD.

That's all for now. We're celebrating Christmas tonight at Kim's, so it's time to go!

Happy Holidays!

My Roomba 570

Christmas came early this year! I have been drooling over iRobot's innovative machines. Especially since we will be installing hardwood floors during the renovation, I thought, Holy CRAP, I have a hard enough time cleaning the current floors (carpet, tile, linoleum), how will I do it when it's hardwood and tile? Enter the Roomba and Scooba into my mind.

Well, we celebrated an early Christmas because we'll be on the road shortly. One of the spectacular gifts I received was my very own Roomba 570!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!

It came with two virtual walls/lighthouses, a docking station, and a maintenance kit (brushes, filters, etc). It ran right out of the box, and for a good while too. The battery had a charge, apparently. It's cleaned my bedroom, living room, kitchen, sun room, dining room... It got stuck a couple of times. Once it tried to go up over the oscillating fan base. It doesn't seem to sense the drop between the dining room and the sun room. I think because the rails for the sliding glass door are still installed, and it's a multi-level drop to the sun room floor. That's okay though. The virtual wall takes care of that. It's so cool. It stops just short of where the virtual wall is set up on the floor, pauses to think a little, and then turns to go a different way.

The coolest part is that knows how to go "home". I put it in the middle of the floor when the battery was low, and it made a beeline for the docking station and parked itself for some shut-eye. How cool is that?!

So wonderfully cool. I haven't named my Roomba yet. I'll let you know what I decide to call it.

Jen's Grandfather

Much sympathy goes to my happy sister Jen, whose grandfather passed away on Friday. She's doing all she can to find a cure for cancer, working in a cancer research lab and doing real leg work for the cause too (in the marathon manner of speaking).

Please take a moment and visit her Team In Training page. Even better, leave a donation to help her meet her goal.

My thoughts are with you, happy sister.

No means NO!

So, I'm getting pretty darn irritated that Billy finds it fun to push the power button on my Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). He's done it twice today. The spare TiVo is attached to it, along with my desktop computer and who knows what else.

Here's my solution. Let's see if it works.

My Neighborhood

Bill just told me about the murders that happened earlier this week. I'm completely bothered by it because the first house in the following article is just around the corner from us!!

I didn't hear a thing when it happened.

My eyebrow is twitching again.

Here's the article:

2 face drug charges after Melbourne triple slaying

Third grow house found nearby

BY KIMBERLY C. MOORE
FLORIDA TODAY

Investigators may never know what caused 49-year-old Juan Torres to kill two relatives and then shoot himself in a Wednesday morning rampage that sent the upscale, quiet community on Turtle Mound Road into a panic.

It's an area known more for horses and luxury homes than shootouts and the marijuana grow operations authorities said the dead men were apparently running inside two homes.

A third grow house was found on nearby Harlock Road. Melbourne police Cmdr. Ron Bell said officers Thursday morning arrested Alfredo Garcia, 43, and Yunior Martinez, 28, both listed as residents of the home. Each was charged with trafficking in cannabis, cultivation of cannabis and possession of cannabis with intent to distribute. They are being held without bond.

Police said Garcia was related to one of the slain men, Omar Garcia.

The terror for the neighborhood began about 10 a.m. Wednesday when Torres chased his cousin-by-marriage, 24-year-old Omar Garcia, from Garcia's home at 3681 Turtle Mound Road. They ran across the road and into Jeannette Ruth's back yard.

"There's a guy running around with a shotgun around my house -- there's one guy chasing another guy, shooting at him," Ruth told a 9-1-1 dispatcher. "He shot somebody. My dad said he shot somebody, and they're lying in my yard. He's dead. He's lying in my yard."

Six members of the horrified family from South Africa could only stare from inside the home and wait for police officers to arrive more than eight minutes after they first called.

Back across the street, neighbor Neil Plotkin saw a man in a windbreaker jacket -- authorities said it was Torres -- jump into a Honda Ridgeline pickup and speed out of the driveway.

About a mile south, Torres parked the truck in the driveway of 4000 Lake Washington Road, which is owned by a relative, Luis Acevedo.

Police said Torres went inside the home and found his brother-in-law, 36-year-old Elieser S. Alfonso, near a screened-in back porch. Investigators said Thursday that Torres shot Alfonso in the upper torso and his brother-in-law fell to the floor just inside a sliding glass door leading to the kitchen. Then Torres put the gun to his own chest and pulled the trigger. He was found on the porch.

"Everything points to him having a self-inflicted wound," said Brevard County Sheriff's Homicide Agent Carlos Reyes, who said he didn't know what caused the fight.

Inside both homes, investigators found massive amounts of drugs. Melbourne police said the house on Turtle Mound was used to create methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant, along with marijuana. The house on Lake Washington was used as a grow house for marijuana.

Reyes said the three men primarily lived in Miami, where their wives reside. He said he spoke to Torres' wife Wednesday, when she was about to file a missing person's report on her husband. She was devastated.

"The family was distraught and shocked when I talked to them," Reyes said.

He declined to speculate as to whether the men were running drugs from Brevard County to Miami or selling them locally. But he added that the men carefully chose the locations of their drug operations, paying nearly $800,000 for the two properties. The Turtle Mound and Lake Washington areas are known for low crime rates, spacious lots and neighbors who are too far away to be too nosy.

"It's very strategic to come to these nicer areas," Reyes said. "They could come once a week and check on it. They close the gates, put the Christmas lights on . . . who knows how long it's gone on or how long it would've gone on without this family feud?"

A giant inflatable snowman stood sentry at the Lake Washington home as Sheriff's crime scene investigators, Melbourne police and K-9 officers and a locksmith arrived Thursday morning. Red and green candy canes lined a front-yard flowerbed, and a jolly St. Nick festooned the front door.

But, investigators said, it was all a facade to make neighbors think the house was occupied by residents celebrating the holidays. Inside, there were no Christmas tree or wrapped presents -- only marijuana plants, heat lamps and a watering system.

In the backyard, detectives found two other pieces of the charade. An animal services officer led a young, chestnut-colored horse into a waiting trailer. A chocolate and white paint horse whinnied as she followed.

Reyes said deputies fed the horses Wednesday and Thursday and they appeared to be very hungry. They will be housed at a temporary shelter until the family claims them or they can be put up for adoption.

Rough Night

Billy decided to wake up at 2:30am and I think he didn't go back to sleep until around 5 after much mommy-begging and rounds of Goodnight Moon... I think this may be a very long day. He has a runny nose, so I think that made it hard for him to get back to sleep.

Hoping for a migraine-free day. Yesterday's was debilitating until I stepped away from the office and spent some couch time with Billy. Either I needed the few minutes of napping that I got, or the motion of laying down did me some good.

If I Were A Rich (Wo)Man...

I just love Amazon. Seriously. Here are the great deals I stumbled on while waiting for Bill to get home from CA.

Lord of the Rings TRILOGY, all THREE! $17.99 -- If I didn't already have all three, I'd buy it.

The Exorcist, the Complete Anthology, sale price is $18.49! Six discs for your marathon viewing pleasure. (Not me, I'm a wuss these days.)

Pokemon Movie Collection... for the kid (or the kid in you)! This has 3 discs.

Smallville and Veronica Mars are still $14.99 for most of the seasons. There are just too many to list. Check it out yourself, you'll probably find something you've been wanting. Amazon's Big DVD Sale

Tis the Season For... Fruit Cake!

Why, oh WHY doesn't anyone have my mother's fruit cake recipe?! Shame on everyone for losing it, including Mom.

This was a fruit cake she used to make for the family and contained no alcohol. I can't even imagine eating a fruit cake doused in liquor. Yuck. I remember lots of sugar, butter, flour, eggs, and containers of candied fruit. And nuts, but if I were to make it today, I'd leave the nuts out. Seems like such a simple recipe, and I vaguely remember equal portions of ingredients, like 4 cups of sugar, 4 cups of flour, 4 eggs, etc. But, maybe that's not right.

If anyone comes across the recipe, please share!!

Free Music

This may very well be the worst preview for a song ever. After listening to the clip, my face was so scrunched up. Wow. The song is free from Amazon, though after listening to the clip, they couldn't pay me to download it.

The nice thing is that Dashboard Confessional and KT Tunstall have free downloads too. There's even some Sophie Milman for Cora. I downloaded the KT Tunstall Drastic Fantastic album after listening to the clips, and I really love most of the album. It was only $5.99!

Trying to Keep Up

Trying to keep up with posting more regularly. It feels like the past few days (weeks?) have been frenzied with multiple projects keeping me busy.

Coming down to the wire with the enhancement specs. The numbers are dwindling, and there's a light at the end of the tunnel, but meanwhile... ugh. Other projects include Christmas shopping, website stuff, Christmas present-making... too much!

Watched We Are Marshall tonight. Great flick. Matthew McConaughey was a bit much with talking out of the side of his mouth, but still enjoyable as the coach. Enjoyed the rest of the cast as well. Nicely done. We pass through WV on the way up to NY, and as depicted in the movie, it is quite picturesque. Never really enjoy it when we're passing through though. Especially the bit where we have to drive through the town Summersville. You're going at a nice pace, and then get stuck driving through the town, traffic lights and all.

Made Smores Cookie Bars tonight using a recipe from the Hershey cookbook. Yuck. I guess "yuck" because I used marshmallows instead of marshmallow creme (is there a difference?! apparently so!). So the marshmallows basically melted and made a nice chewy candy caramel in certain places. The rest of the cookie bar was much like a chocolate chip cookie, but not. Oh well. Will not likely make that again.

Gorgonzola Salad, Chopped Steak, and a Few Nightmares Please

Well, enough of that! I got about 3 hours of interrupted and restless sleep. If it wasn't the baby waking me up, it was the continuous stream of disturbing and down-right scary dreams.

There was the nightmare where it was deja-vu that the power went out, looked for a flashlight, found one, and also found a decapitated head in a bedroom. Coming down the hallway after leaving said head was the decapitator, nervously attempting to make his way to the bedroom to hide the still-moving dead-head. Another nightmare had me portraying someone that got shot point-blank in the chest multiple times (no, I didn't feel a thing). Cut to another nightmare where some other poor bastard was shot down and a group of people were trying to rescue him without being shot themselves from the crazy sniper across the ocean/lake. Cut to a crazy woman who killed 3 of her husbands and was hell bent on getting into the room I was in. I locked the tiny deadbolt, but she could peer through the door opening by the door jamb and taunt me.

Needless to say, each time I forced myself to wake up, and now I'm just AWAKE. Just as well. It's 6:35am and maybe I should be awake.

*sigh* I think that's the last time I eat a gorgonzola salad and chopped steak dinner from Roadhouse Grill. Sheesh.

For Curing What Ails You

Yes, laughter is the best medicine - especially when it's baby laughter.

Migraine, Go Away!

I have been suffering all day with a nasty migraine, or what I thought was a migraine. I love it when I take Excedrin Migraine and it works. I hate it when I take it and it doesn't work. Felt so sick this afternoon, I crawled into bed next to Billy, who was already napping. Nausea and pain... ugh. Must not be a migraine since Excedrin didn't make it go away - it did for a very brief while, then it came back :-(

Talked to mom today, she wanted to me put in her application for social security since she was having trouble with getting through on the phone. That was a long and painful process simply because the baby restless and there are a zillion questions. Ugh, again. She did say that she was going to ride w/ Aunty to Vegas as Aunty passes through with Cousin to AZ. So, sis, looks like you'll have your day with mom yet...

Time to see if more sleep shakes this demon-pain away.

Omaha Shooting

Got my CNN Breaking News email tonight, and was pretty shocked to see that it involved a gunman in a mall in Omaha. Hope everyone I know there was far away from Westroads and is safe and sound.

Eye Clops

I have been looking at the Jakks EyeClops Bionic Eye for Marcus and it's been priced at $49.99, then $44.99. Well... Guess what?! It's now $29.99! I think this might be pretty fun...

[edit: Well... it might be fun, except it doesn't have free super saver shipping, and, they must have just raised the price - it's now $34.99...]

This and That

The temperature has dropped nicely. It's now 71 degrees and sunny out. I love this weather, wish it was like this year-round.

Bill is off to Fort Lauderdale this morning. Ok, actually he's already there. I'm taking a little break before digging back into work. Billy is tired and rubbing the tag from his bear-blanket on his eye. He just fell off of Bill's chair. He loves to race us to our office chairs and enjoys climbing and sitting on them. We're going to have to get a third chair!

I have been trying to get Clarkie a bicycle. First for his birthday (it didn't work out) and then for Christmas. Amazon was having a decent sale on kids bikes. And, it said free super saver shipping. So I have all this stuff in my shopping cart and go to check out. And What?? They want to charge $30 shipping. I think I've been in this situation before and must be why I didn't get the bike in the first place. Apparently it's free shipping, unless you're not part of the 48 contiguous states, for some items. Boo. I really don't know why businesses see it differently than a package that might be just as big that they still offer free shipping on. Doesn't make sense. Oh well. So, now I'm back at square one for Clarkie gifts. I have some ideas...

Time for lunch.

Veronica Mars DVDs

Amazon has Veronica Mars Season One and Veronica Mars Season Two DVDs currently for $14.99 each!!

I just found out that the last disc that I watched, which was disc 5, actually had the last episode of the series on it. I'm so disappointed. I was expecting disc 6 to have at least 2 more episodes on it. *sigh*

Another wonderful series bites the dust.

Sad Realization

I just realized something about the loss of my journal previously hosted by the evil-web-host.

I no longer have record of my pregnancy or the miscellaneous updates about what was going on with the baby.

I'm so sad. My last saved backup is from Feb 2006.

Hawaii Warriors: PERFECT!!

Congratulations to the Hawaii Warriors!!!!

It was scary in the first half, but they managed to come back. Colt & the offense did their job, and the Defense managed to close the deal for a 35-28 win, Second to the last play was an amazing interception in the end zone (whew, thank goodness).

Whee!! Can't wait to see the results for BCS.
