Book Reviews

Journal of mortifying moments: Cute. Therapist suggests a journal to help her understand why her relationship is failing. Her mortifying moments are a bit over the top, but pretty funny.

Last summer (of you and me): Sister drama. Very east coast, very touching. Characters were very well liked and I really wanted to get to the end of the book to find out the fate of the characters. Author wrote Sisterhood of the traveling pants series.

Heaven looks a lot like the mall: Teen read about a girl who is in a coma and flashes back through various events in her life. Enjoyable and I liked the format-- sort of like mini short stories.

It's a mall world after all: Teen chick lit. Girl sees boyfriend's best friend cheating on her. Tries to tell her, then has to prove it. She could have her own journal of mortifying moments... Teen romance & mall humor. Fun.

Dance of death: Pendergast (super bad-ass FBI agent who's as cool as a cucumber) novel. I love this series. Now I get the whole Margo thing... Too bad I've been reading them out of order.

Currently reading: Wheel of Darkness, Candyshop War, Alchemyst

Growing Up

I realize my child is growing up when the following conversation took place yesterday. I noticed that he's not been eating his grapes from lunch and I asked him about it.

Me: How come you didn't eat your grapes?
C-Man: I dunno.
Me: You don't like grapes anymore?
C-Man: I do. [pause] Mommy, how come you have to cut my grapes?
Me: Because they have seeds in the middle. [pause as lightbulb goes on in my head] You don't want me to cut your grapes?
C-Man: No, cause only babies need to have their grapes cut.
Me: If I dont' cut your grapes will you eat them?
C-Man: Yeah.
Me: Okay.
C-Man: Can you make a puka and take out the seeds? But don't cut them in half, kay?
Me: Uh. I don't know. How's about if I just look for grapes that don't have seeds next time?
C-Man: Okay.
Me: Can I still cut your apples into slices?
C-Man: Mom! You have to cut the apples. I can't eat a whole apple!
Me: [loud audible sigh] Okay.

Today I sent him off to school with his sandwich and some whole, uncut grapes (with seeds, I tried to dig out the seeds and it wasn't worth my effort-- too bad -- crunchy grapes for you). He came home with half of the grapes, but at least he started eating them again.

Oh, and he will eat cut grapes at home. Apparently, if he's at home it's still okay to slice his grapes. Just don't do it in front of his friends.

Future of our keiki?

Now that I know the future of our nation is not in dire jeopardy from the Republicans thinking that we’re doing fine and on the right path, I can now gripe about Hawaii and it’s political fiasco of a future, specifically concerning budget cuts to the DOE.

How can the governor think that she can cut 20% from the DOE and maintain the same quality of education that is necessary to keep our keiki from sinking further into the depths of ignorance and low test scores? And why does the discussion always mean the destruction of all that is fun for children in school? Yet again, my school (the school that I happen to work on the campus of) is discussing how to reduce their budget by 20%. Let me tell you, you can’t reduce a budget by a fifth and expect to keep all your positions. The positions of librarian, p.e. teacher, and music teacher are once again on the cutting table. Thankfully, we have SOME people on their leadership with the brains to fight for keeping those positions alive. Woohoo to those people!

When is the DOE going to figure out that the way to get kids to learn is to make learning somewhat enjoyable? When are they going to learn that kids will WANT to learn if you make learning somewhat enjoyable? When are they going to learn that if you cut out all the things that make school fun, (art, music, LIBRARY, etc.) learning then becomes something you resist and eventually resent? Aaargh! I just get so frustrated. How’s about cutting the budget somewhere else and leaving education alone? Better yet, how’s about cutting positions in the district offices and other higher up makamaka places and leaving the schools alone? Get a clue LINDA! Save our keiki!

My mood: back to localized frustration and worrying about the future of this state

A broken heart and an inspiration

My heart sank this afternoon when I learned of the passing of Barack's grandmother. She was so close to watching her grandson become the next President of the United States. What a proud moment it would be for her to see her grandson achieve such an honor as the respect of a powerful nation, a nation that has overcome such obstacles as the color of a man's skin. I'm sure she was already quite proud and that wherever she may be, she knows that whatever the outcome, he is the bringer of hope and an inspiration to a new generation of America.

I only wish every child had someone like that in their lives.

My mood: tearful, hopeful, full of cheese
